You probably need to find out who Glen Mills, Brett Mannin, and Bill Campbell are, but they have one thing in common. They coach some of the renowned and successful athletes, musicians, and technology leaders. Glen Mills was the coach of Usain Bolt, Brett Mannin was the vocal coach of Taylor Swift, and Bill Campbell coached Bill Gates. Behind every successful person, you will find a coach who navigates the person in their life to perform better and helps them craft the better version of it.
We all need advice at some point in our lives; the only question is, “When and from whom?”
When looking for an advisor, we often get confused in the verbatim. We underscore the importance of a coach and a mentor, who are different from the consultant and the supervisor. Some people look for mentorship from a supervisor, while others look for coaching advice from a consultant. Although all four fall under the same category of an advisor but, their impact on one’s personal and corporate life could be totally different.
A supervisor or a manager is a person with whom you work on duty to get the targets and goals delivered. The advisor in that role could be the employee’s direct manager, and the advisory role is limited to the affairs related to the work. Supervisors are not involved in the employees’ personal lives, and they also have minimal impact on corporate life because the supervisor’s role is not beyond the scope of duty and within the boundary of the respective industry.
The impact on corporate life is significant when someone works with a management consultant who provides feedback to employees on their specific job and compares it with industry standards at a strategic level. Since most consultants are external third parties, their influence on personal lives is minimal and outside the scope of their assigned duties.
The real impact on the personal life comes from the coach, who guides the individual to place their energy in the right direction. If someone is looking for a coach, they should seek advice from someone who can provide above industry guidance for personal growth, which is different from achieving the annual target and goals for the organization from where the employee is paid. The coach’s role is vital, as they try to bring out the better version of the person and give the right advice to crack the true potential. The coaches’ names mentioned above are crucial in building the brand names Usain Bolt, Taylor Swift, and Bill Gates. We all need a coach at a certain point in life who can channel our strength and put our energy in the right direction to impact our personal lives positively. A positive impact on personal life could lead to a positive impact on corporate life.
Only some people are fortunate to find a person who can help them not only bring an impact in their personal lives but also their corporate lives. If you find such a person in your lifetime, hold them tight with your passion and urge to find a better version of yourself, and seek guidance to perform well in your corporate life. Such a person can only be found if you do not look for that person from the lens of authority or measure the knowledge from the size of the office that person is holding.
It is not easy to find someone who could be your mentor, but when you find someone who can positively impact your corporate and personal life, tell that person kind-heartedly, “Will you be my mentor?” then look for a reaction and add the final word, “Please.”
As a final note, here is the advisory matrix that I prepared on the axis of ‘Impact on Personal Life’ and ‘Impact on Corporate Life’. This matrix explains the role of Supervisor, Consultant, Coach, and Mentor in our two-dimensional lives.
If you have reach to the end, then i would like to say “thank you” for spending your time and reading things article. Please do leave your comments, and share with other like-minded people.
